Today, work-life balance is viewed as more important than ever. Yet, as a Nurse Practitioner entrepreneur, it can often feel like you have too much on your plate. From family commitments to juggling more than one job, you may be struggling to achieve a happy work-life balance. Being an entrepreneur does not mean that you must give up on your personal goals or sacrifice your personal relationships, but you do have to incorporate some best practices into your daily routine if you are to achieve that balance.
In this article, we share with you our three top work-life balance tips for NP entrepreneurs!
Get Your Priorities Straight
With so many tasks demanding your attention, the first thing you will need to do is prioritize. To begin with, work out what are your non-negotiables. This can look different for everyone — for instance, if you are a working parent, pickup and drop-off time for your kids may be non-negotiable. If you are following fixed working hours at any of your jobs, this will also count as a non-negotiable.
Once you have determined what your priorities are, it’s time to figure out how you can best work around them. If you are waking up early to drop off your kids every morning, why not take that time to do some work while you are wide awake? When you are able to make the most of the time you have instead of trying to carve out time you don’t have, you will find that a work-life balance becomes much more attainable.
Set Specific Goals
What exactly are your goals? By this, we don’t mean what you set out to achieve as an NP entrepreneur, although that definitely ties into it. Each day, you should sit down and set one or two specific goals that you wish to accomplish, and make sure you do it. Instead of having a goal that is too vague or ambitious to complete in a day, setting yourself specific tasks to complete will help you stay on track that much better.
Once you have determined what you need to get done for the day, it may be a good idea to tick them off your list from the start. If you need to go through your weekly emails, do that first thing instead of putting it off till the end of the day, where you will be exhausted and more likely to find excuses not to do it. This is an effective way to prevent procrastination, especially if you struggle with getting things done under stress or tight deadlines.
Establish Clear Limits
A top work-life balance tip for employees is to establish clear limits between the worlds of work and family. When you are working, you are working and when you are with family, you are with family. This means no checking work emails during family time and letting your kids know when not to disturb you when you are working. If a work email comes in during family time, it can wait. Instead of worrying about work when you should be with family or worrying about family when you should be doing work, setting clear limits allows you to dedicate a fair portion of your day to what really matters.
This can be easier said than done, especially if you have gotten into a habit of bringing work home or especially if you work from home. However, once you have established clear boundaries in your life, you will find that a work-life balance becomes that much easier to attain. If you work from home, you may want to set a physical boundary where work starts and ends, such as an office. Not only will this ensure that you are focused on work when you need to be, you will also be able to give your family your undivided attention when it’s time for them!
